Acupuncture for Pain Management

When standard treatments fail to ease chronic pain in the muscles and joints, patients often turn to other therapies to provide comfort and improve their quality of life. An alternative to standard treatments like ice and heat, anti-inflammatory medications, physical therapy, and exercises, acupuncture is a key component of traditional Chinese medicine.

How does it work?

Acupuncturists insert hair-thin needles into the skin at specific points around the body in an effort to correct imbalances in the flow of energy in the body, called qi (pronounced “chee”). By inserting needles into specific points, acupuncture practitioners believe that the energy flow will re-balance.

Many Western practitioners view acupuncture points as places to stimulate nerves, muscles and connective tissue to boost your body’s natural painkillers and increase blood flow.

For new pain, it is recommended that individuals have clear diagnoses from their physicians to rule out serious medical conditions that should be treated right away. Once the cause of the pain has been determined, patients may pursue acupuncture if appropriate.

Although most often used for pain relief, acupuncture also can be used to treat the following conditions:

  • High blood pressure
  • Gastrointestinal disorders
  • Colds and flus
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Diabetes
  • Weight control
  • Stress
  • Arthritis
  • Muscle spasms
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Ear, nose and throat disorders
