Five Foods you Should be Eating to Boost Brain Health

Our brains are the control centers of our bodies. That’s why fueling our bodies with nutrients that can aid brain health is so vitally important.

Balanced nutrition, brain exercises, stress management and physical activity are all part of the brain health equation.

In this blog, we’re focusing primarily on the foods that can boost brain health, protect brain cells, improve memory and even reduce a person’s odds of developing Alzheimer’s disease.

Avocados

The monounsaturated fats that are found in avocados support healthy blood flow, which in turn supports healthy brain function. Avocados can also help lower blood pressure. High blood pressure is a risk factor that directly correlates to a decrease in cognitive abilities, so lower blood pressure levels should promote and support brain health.

Blueberries

Researchers have found that blueberries can help protect the brain from oxidative stress, which may reduce the effects of conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. Whether they’re mixed in with your oatmeal, cereal or fruit salad, this antioxidant-rich superfood is one that should be added to your daily diet. The recommended serving of blueberries is one cup per day.

Dark chocolate

Full of powerful antioxidants, dark chocolate is a sweet way to promote brain health. Because dark chocolate contains caffeine and other natural stimulants, concentration and focus will be enhanced, which helps facilitate the production of endorphins that help improve a person’s mood. Just a half ounce to an ounce a day will provide all of the benefits that this superfood can provide – so no need to overindulge!

Eggs

The egg yolk is chock-full of choline –a macronutrient that helps with liver and nerve function, muscle movement, and supports a healthy metabolism. Most importantly, however, choline supports normal brain function. Eggs are also rich in B vitamins such as B6, B12 and folic acid. These vitamins can help reduce homocysteine levels in the blood, which are often associated with a higher risk of Alzheimer’s disease, cognitive impairment and strokes.

Tomatoes

Tomatoes are classified as a carotenoid –a brain-protecting class of plant nutrients. Carotenoids guard the fat in the body, which is very important for brain function given the fact that the human brain is comprised mainly of fat. Tomatoes are also rich in lycopene, a powerful antioxidant. Lycopene has been shown to protect against the type of free radical damage to cells that’s present during the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.
